The Dukes Of Hartford

Dukes

Dad is sitting behind his desk in his law office in downtown Hartford, Connecticut. Across from him sits a young guy. He’s probably nineteen or twenty years old. He and his brother recently got arrested for, among others things, fleeing from the police. The duo got pulled over for a traffic infraction and then tried to escape in their muscle car, causing the police to engage in a high-speed pursuit. The car belonged to Dad’s client, but the brother was driving.

Dad looks across the table and says “You know, you’re going to need to testify. You need to show that it was your brother’s idea to flee, not yours.”

The kid glares back and says “No way, I’m not ratting out my brother.”

This kid’s obviously been watching lots of Dukes Of Hazzard reruns. He understands loyalty.

Dad tries to reason with his client once more. Evasion is a serious crime, a felony. Getting some sort of plea bargain ahead of time could prevent the client from a life working at Jiffy Lube doing oil changes.

“Well,” Dad says, trying a new tack, “they’re going to impound your car. It could be there for months.”

The kid’s eyes go wide.

Months?” he says, “Screw it, I’ll talk.”

Blood might be thicker than water. But not gasoline

  1. Mr. Sullivan is a clever man. When in doubt, hit them in their transportation vehicle!

  2. It’s all about the car. I know this first hand experience. I have an attorney brother who would rat on his kids if someone threatened to impound his Model A Ford or 1953 Oldsmobile.
