So it’s winter!

Well it’s finally Winter (with a capital W) here in northeast Ohio again. Now I have to hear the constant complaint about how cold it is and “when is spring going to come?” and “have you seen how much snow is in the snow belt”.

It’s only 3 weeks into winter and this from people who have lived here all their lives. Guess what, it’s not going to change, it’s winter for goodness sake. Of course, these are the same people who I’ll hear from in August telling me it’s too hot and too humid, “I can’t wait until Fall comes”.

Of course if you’re a runner then you have to put up with those same people commenting about:

“Oh, one of my New Years resolutions is to start running but it’s too cold”

No excuses! Just dress accordingly. After the first 10 minutes you’ll realize you overdressed!

Here’s an idea. After you get dressed, run inside on the treadmill or up and down the stairs for 5 minutes before you go out. You’ll be nice and toasty already once you get out the door.

Of course you can wimp out and use the treadmill at home or at the gym!

“Oh I can’t run outside that cold air will freeze my lungs”

No excuses. That’s an old wives tail, there is no scientific evidence to support that but I hear it again and again every year. You can cover your mouth with a scarf but you’ll soon discover you don’t need it. Again, you can always wimp out and use the treadmill approach.

“Oh there’s snow on the ground”

So what, you walked out to the mailbox to get the mail. You can run in the snow just as easily. In fact it’s a pretty good workout! And when you get back you can build a snowman!

So get up, get dressed and get out the door and, since it’s NE Ohio, next week it’ll be 50 degrees and you’ll be wearing shorts again!

On a more positive note, you won’t have to cool down when you’re done!
