The countdown to college admission is filled with anxiety. As a parent, I’ve been through it with both of my children and lived to tell about it. In fact, I documented the experience, humor, and strategy in a book. College Bound and Gagged: How to Help Your Kid Get Into a Great College Without Losing Your Savings, Your Relationship, or Your Mind is a parent survival guide for the college-bound journey. It’s always easier to talk about college admission once the experience is behind you. Little did I know that, after the book’s publication, I’d be wrapped up in another exciting admission decision. In early 2012, I was contacted to sign a release for my book to appear in Admission, a feature film starring Tina Fey and Paul Rudd. After confirming this wasn’t a hoax by mean-spirited strangers or family pranksters, my shock turned to excitement. College Bound and Gagged might be in a movie. True, it wasn’t like I had been offered a cameo, but in many ways it was better. Authors become attached to their work, so when people recognize our books it’s like complimenting our children. Besides, my book cover would fare much better in HD than [...]

I’ve been thinking a lot about Jack and Jackie Harbaugh today. As a psychologist and the mom of two boys sharing a career path in film, I can’t help but analyze the Harbaugh situation. When two of your children are literally at the top of their game, it’s hardly a dilemma. However, it does pose enough parenting challenges to make you wish for their good old childhood days when everyone got a trophy. All good parents want their adult children to win their biggest career games. The problem is, we don’t expect they’ll be going up against a sibling in the process. Thinking of the Harbaughs, I can now add one more neurotic thought to my parent to-do list — “What if my boys are nominated for an Oscar in the same category, the same year?” Sure, statistically speaking it’s not very likely, but that’s probably what the senior Harbaughs thought last week. Today, I suspect the couple’s had more neutrality discussions than the Swiss Confederation. That’s because this exciting moment must be handled with strategy and kid gloves on four different fronts. Location The family logistics of this incredible Super Bowl XLVII opportunity seem rather tricky. Sure, they’ve scored a double invite, [...]

There’s no formula to predict how long a celebrity’s star will shine, but I’m certain there are subtle clues that just might forecast the future. Browsing Target’s post-Christmas sale in mid-January (which is much more telling than the merchandise being scooped up on 12/26), I spotted an arsenal of leftover Bieber holiday paper in both the red and green Christmas option and the blue and white snowflake “could-pass-for-Hanukkah-in-a-pinch” alternative. Did retailers overestimate the popularity of the pop star or fail to realize that his audience doesn’t buy as much wrapping paper as their parents? My guess is that parents who’ve witnessed the rip and tear of Christmas morning aren’t quick to buy trendy paper at an upcharge. Let’s hope The Bieb’s career isn’t being discounted though, I bought two rolls of gift wrap paper for next year.
