Dating in the 90s

A 99-year-old Italian man is seeking a divorce from his 96-year-old wife because he uncovered an affair she had in the 1940’s.  The couple has been together for 77 years.  Once the divorce is finalized, the man is looking forward to getting back into the dating game.  Of course, times have changed. Instead of looking for a woman who has the ability to start his motor, he will be looking for a woman who has the certification to re-start his heart.

However it reminds me of something I witnessed in my daycare incarnation a number of years ago. See, from 9-to-5 I’m a court clerk at Family Court. We hear child support and spousal support cases, paternity cases, custody and visitation cases, and requests for orders of protection.

So this one time, sometime in the mid-’90s, I was working with a support magistrate hearing a case to enforce provisions of a divorce in regard to alimony. The case involved a couple of octogenarians. During the course of the hearing, the woman mentioned some transgression her ex-husband had done in 1952. The magistrate, a few years younger than me–and I was born in 1953–said, “I’m sorry, ma’am, but I’m afraid I’m not going to be able to allow testimony about events that ocurred before I was born.”
