Early Snow in The North East

I couldn’t help but giggle at the headline I saw on Yahoo today.  People in the North East USA are bracing for anything from a dusting to a foot of snow in an early October snowfall.  Why would I giggle, that seems harsh doesn’t it?  Well let me tell you something, I live in Atlanta, no fear of October snow here, but ~screen goes fuzzy and wavy as I take you back in time~ in August of 1989 I was working in a quaint town on the north shore of Lake Superior, that’s in Ontario, Canada for you Google Earth freaks.  Funniest thing happened, I came out of my motel room (very Bates Motel type place but that’s for another post) and there was three inches of snow on my truck.  Oh I laughed, then I cried.  I went back into the motel and checked the calendar, yes August 15, 1989, August…summer….three inches of snow.  The temperature was 28 degrees and my bare hands numbed as I brushed the cursed snow from the windshield.  That afternoon it was a balmy 90 degrees.  I snapped, I couldn’t do it anymore, I called the office in Toronto and told them I quit!!!! They chuckled a bit, mainly because they were not on the north shore of Lake Superior, and said oh don’t quit Peter, move to Atlanta.  My obvious response, being a Canadian and all was “does it snow in August in Atlanta?”  Assured that it did not I merrily loaded up the truck and I moved to Georgia in October of 1989.

So now, 22 years later, I still hide here in Dixie.  This February we had a “freak” snow storm, a foot of the ugly nasty white stuff.  My son, born here in Atlanta, wanted to go out and frolic in it, I said go ahead and stood at the bay window, rum and coke in hand as I watched him roll around in it only to come in and moan about how cold he was.  I didn’t leave the house for 4 days until the white crud all melted, then I ventured out, I was out of rum anyway.

October snow, boy are you Americans soft.
