The Definition of Irony

My daughter and I were watching the show “Cash Cab” and we started to discuss how vital cabs were to people in cities. She argued that even if people live in the sticks, they sometimes need cabs and her proof of this theory is that she would occasionally take cabs at college  So, I said in my sarcastic and disapproving tone,

“Oh, you mean after being at the bars or parties, you needed a cab?”

To which she responded,

“No, if I was too tired to walk to my first class.”

“What?!  You paid for a cab so you didn’t have to walk? Your apartment was not that far from campus and there were buses. What class?”

And I kid you not; this was her answer:

“Fitness Walking.”

I had no response. I just watched to see if my daughter, a true fitness guru,  got the irony of this situation. Finally, she looked at me and laughed,

“But, Mom, it was too cold to wait at the bus stop.”

“But you did your fitness walking OUTSIDE!”

She shrugged her shoulders and left the room and I realized that this was one of those moments when I really missed that $100,000 in tuition the most.
