Ain’t That A Kick In The Head (Or A Phone Book)

There’s a new commercial promoting Shaquille O’Neal’s addition as a commentator on the NBA on TNT. He throws a free throw, and of course, misses. The ball bounces off the rim, hits a crew member on the head and knocks him out. And it cracks me up. Everytime. That’s because I think it’s funny when people get hit in the head. Okay, not just funny but hilarious. Show me a commercial, television show or movie where someone gets smacked in the noggin’ and I’m in hysterics.

I love the commercial a few years back where the old lady throws a phone book at a guy’s head because he’s trying to steal her cab. Oh and remember the commercial where there are people in an office going to a big meeting and only two guys have the information needed to close the deal? On the way to the meeting, one runs head-on into an open filing cabinet and gets knocked out. The other slips as he goes to sit down, hits his head on the conference room table and it’s nap time for the poor bastard. Classic.

But the king of all smacked in the head commercials so far is the Windex one where the two birds trick the guy into walking into his extremely clean glass patio doors. It doesn’t matter how many times I see it, it cracks me up every time. As a matter of fact, a friend of mine actually did that at a Starbucks. He even left an imprint of his face on the glass. Sure, I asked him if he was okay but only after I was able to regain my composure.

I don’t know why I find blunt head trauma so funny. Maybe it’s some weird Keystone Kops-slip-on-the-banana-peel syndrome. Perhaps it harkens to my love of all things Looney Tunes. I have no idea. I feel guilty that I never stop to consider the possible injury that may result from the poor bastard running into his glass patio doors. Then again, it’s not my fault Windex is streak free, is it? How can you be upset when someone takes the time to make a quality product? Though I have to admit I’m starting to worry about the pleasure I take in people’s cranial misfortunes.

Oh, well, screw it. It’s still funny….
