Through no real doing of my own, I’ve been following the “I Quit” video saga of this week, only because every media outlet seems to be totally invested in it (I think it may have been the top story on CNN over the government shutdown).
If you’re not familiar with this saga, here’s a recap.
- A young American woman quit her editing job in Taiwan via a YouTube video of herself dancing to a Kanye West song.
- Then, the Taiwan company created their own viral video to the same Kanye West song, saying, “We’re hiring.”
- And then, a work-from-home mom, not related to either the Taiwan company nor the young American woman, created her own video saying that she’s quitting doing housework for her family.
First of all, this has been done already—and better—from Jimmy in the 1996 Tom Hanks comedy That Thing You Do.

I’m not entirely sure why an editor would so loudly quit her job, being that it can take some people years to break into this field. As an employer, would you be apt to hire this woman after seeing this video? Or as a prospective significant other, even date her? Poor bastard thinks the relationship is going well until he sees this chick dancing around his apartment with a “Dear John” letter scrolling across his hardwood floors.
I’m also not entirely sure why it was necessary for everyone to see that she quit. People put in their two weeks’ notice every day, but they don’t do a whole video about it. Hers wasn’t any more special than this standard “I quit” storyboard:
- Girl types letter at computer screen. Scroll text: “God, my life is going to be so much better in this new job that has healthcare.”
- Girl hands in letter to boss.
- Boss grimaces and wishes it were him.
- Soon, everyone finds out girl is leaving, and starts talking shit about her.
- (Dance break)
Followup: I guess Queen Latifah offered this chick a job.

Dear God, so apparently there is a market for whiny people who can’t even leave a job without being the center of attention. I guess that might fit Queen’s personality too!
I saw this and thought the same thing about shooting herself in the foot with job opportunities in a field where they are hard to come by, but it was enjoyable. Maybe she can make a fortune composing “I Quit” videos for disgruntled employees and it could branch out into “You’re fired!” or “Guess who is laid off” videos too.
She may have a business for it. You’re right!
