At a recent congressional hearing regarding a bill that would ban abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, Texas Representative Louie Gohmert told a female witness that she should have carried her pregnancy to term even though doctors had determined that the fetus had no brain function.
“I understand that the doctor’s said there’d be no chance of survival and your son would have been in constant pain until birth. But there’s always a slim chance that God could take a kid with no brain function and perform some kind of miracle on him. Maybe brains aren’t really necessary if God wills it. Some people with no brain function have even gone on to be lawyers, governors, representatives, or circus performers. That kid would have a fighting chance to succeed in Texas.”
Deliberations on the bill will continue Tuesday.
