Is the Glass Half Empty or Half Full?

WomanGlassHalfFullIs the glass half empty or half full?

This is a common and rhetorical question used to gauge or demonstrate the pessimism or optimism of a particular point of view.  We could just as easily ask if the glass is a quarter empty or three quarters full but let’s move on.

In any case there is a definite and fixed measurement relating to the amount of liquid in the glass. If you have a positive philosophy to characterize the apportionment of liquid contained in the glass the amount will not increase. By the same token if your point of view is inclined to typify the given volume of liquid in the glass as unsatisfactory the result will not be a reduction in the quantity.

The amount of liquid in the glass is fixed and non-variable.

What this means is that your opinion and attitude doesn’t matter.

Have a nice day.

    1. Sometimes Mike, our only recourse is to convince ourselves to be happy with half of what we need or want. On the other hand I want the pilot of my trans-Atlantic flight to do more than just feel good about the amount of fuel on the plane.

  1. I would call that a pessimistic evaluation of the situation. It’s probably true, but pessimistic.
