The Exodus Song Rewritten For Our Netanyahu Times.
The original song was written by Pat Boone, a famous squeaky clean popular singer in the 1960’s who was handsome and popular with the girls and who was a devoted Christian singer. When Otto Preminger needed a song for his movie of the famous Leon Uris bestseller ‘Exodus’ about the creation of Israel, he turned to Boone who gladly wrote the lyrics.
The still new-born Israel wanted to have the U.S. as a protective ally and, rather than have one of their own people they got a Christian to write it to keep Christains on their side in the conflict with the Palestinian who also inhabited the area. This policy carries over today where the Isralis still depend on the US for help out whenever they get into trouble with their neighbors. But today the politics are different. Israel is a rich country and for decades has been confining and repressing the Palestinieans.
The powerful music and simplistic but stirring lyrics won the music a Best Song award at the 1961 Grammys Awards. Israel considers it to be the second Israeli National Anthem. Unfortunately, in keeping up with the times and to remain accurate, those lyrics need to be updated to be accurate to the new Israel of Benjamin Netanyahu.
