Featured Writer of the Month – February 2013

HumorOutcasts.com loves Megan McLachlan! She’s smart and possesses a wonderful wit that entertains readers of all ages– and that is tough to do.  Pay attention to this writer because she is going places.  We are honored to have her as our Featured Writer of the Month for February.

1. Tell us about the beginnings of Megan McLachlan?  Where were you born?  Where did you go to school? and what do you do for a living?

I was born in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania. I majored in English at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, and after a few years of being a Starbucks barista and freelancing, I now work as an editor for an Internet company, which I’ve been doing for more than three years.

2.  How did you get started writing humor and comedy

I think humor is always something I’ve been drawn to. Even in the “serious” short stories that I wrote in college, there was always an element of humor in them. I think because I tend to think everything is hilarious. I can’t take life too seriously.

3.  What is your inspiration for your humor?

I’m inspired by everything. I like to write down in my journal humorous things I read about or see so that I can use them in my writing. I would say a lot of my humor is a rip-off of Woody Allen, Tina Fey, and my parents.

4. Do you have favorite writers?

Sloane Crosley is one of my favorite humor writers because she manages to be thoughtful and funny, which is a real talent. Woody Allen is another one of my favorites. He’s known for his films, obviously, but his books are great. Patricia Marx is another one that I enjoy.

5. Has humor/comedy always been a part of your life?

I think it has. At a young age, my mother taught me that sometimes the only way to get through tough times is to laugh a little. So when I would experience failures or rejections, I would always think, “Well, I can write about this someday,” or “I can tell my therapist about this someday”—yes, even as a kid. I think that may be something today’s youth is missing: the ability to just laugh at life’s little failures instead of ranting on Facebook or calling it bullying.

6. Favorite comedian or comic  performer?

It always comes back to Woody Allen.

7. What other types of writing do you enjoy doing?

I like *trying* to write short stories. I keep my rejection letters in a big blue binder that dates back to 2006.

8. Writing goals in your future?

I’d love to write a book of essays. And I wouldn’t hate actually selling a short story, either.
