I Am Unaccepting this Grammy On Behalf of Someone Who Deserves It – Because It Works

I am sure that almost everyone following pop culture is familiar with a certain rapper who made negative assertions about Beck winning his Grammy on Sunday night. The subject of what happened has been vigorously covered in the media and also widely parodied. Let’s just say that his last name is the opposite of east and that he is married to a certain butt-baring reality star.

Why would he do such a thing? How could he be so rude? The answer is the same as to why politicians go negative in their campaigns and football players scream insults about their opponents at cameras.

It simply works.

I bet without me mentioning his name nearly everyone knows the rapper I am talking about, however, I also bet far fewer could name five other artists who won a Grammy this past weekend. There were 83 awards handed out. Sam Smith won four of them. By the way he seems like a great young man, I hope that doesn’t hurt his career.

The problem is not the insolent rapper. He is simply doing what works and contrary to the conventional wisdom about this guy that strategy does not require being a genius. He simply fell into a pattern where his already bad behavior was continually rewarded with more publicity.

This type of phenomenon is systemic of a culture that rewards the squeaky wheel, the slayer of social mores, and the creators of the hottest yet most meaningless trending topics.

Yes, the real problem is us.

Maybe we should pay closer attention to the dog in the pack that is our loyal companion…and not the one taking a dump in the middle of the living room floor.
