Dig It – A Review Of A Forthcoming TV Series

archeology

It’s hard watching beloved sources of information turn to sensationalism in an attempt to “modernize” and attract viewers. A while ago I decided to check out the weather on my favored website. Things have really changed with forecasting– I had no idea that wet t-shirt contests are now considered a type of weather pattern.

I grew up reading National Geographic, which was (and still is) a class-act magazine. So I despaired upon reading about a new show from National Geographic called Nazi War Diggers. In the show, four guys cruise European battlefields with metal detectors and dig up dead soldiers. According to the New York Times, real archeologists (ie. ones who don’t appear on TV) feel that the cast’s approach to archeology is “cavalier,” “disrespectful,” and “unprofessional, bordering on the ghoulish.”

That kinda sounds like New Jersey’s approach to politics.

But since this is an interactive forum, I’ll let you be the judge. Perhaps I’m just being stodgy. So tell me what ya think about this — in a promotional video on the National Geographic website, the four “diggers” unearth a German soldier’s skull. And then start playing soccer with it.

Okay, that’s a joke. In the video, one of the cast members actually yanks on a half-buried leg-bone. The video stops just before the guy realizes that he’s pulling on a tree branch.

Here’s what people in Europe should do to protect the sanctity of those battlefields and the unfortunate souls buried there:

Dig a hole and throw in some scrap metal. Then add a bunch of fake skeleton bones (you can find these at med-school supply shops). And then carefully reposition the bones. The cameras will be rolling as the four guys dig down into the ground. And when the last of the dirt is cleared away, the cast members and the ten people watching the show will look down and see the phrase “YOU SUCK” spelled out in bone.

I’m hoping that a quick and painful death is the fate awaiting this show.

  1. Please don’t let this show come over here. It’s not easy avoiding television although I do try.
