Kids Find the Darndest Things

It has recently been reported that a primary school in Uganda was using an unexploded mortar bomb as a bell – FOR THREE YEARS!

Fortunately the device was discovered before being detonated and removed by anti-mine activist.  Uganda is one of many nations in Africa where unrecovered mortars and land mines from previous wars pose a threat to the civilian population, especially inquisitive young minds.  The prevailing poverty of such nations often force inhabitants to use second hand material they find laying around or even in local landfills.

Wilson Bwambale, coordinator of Anti-Mines Network Rwenzori “recommended that the school look for something else that could be used as a gong.”   In checking back with them one week later, the item pictured below was hung in place of the mortar bomb, found by one of the children following a drug raid at a local home nearby.

Hmmm!  This looks very familiar.

  1. Oh my! Bomb to bong! How does a bong go bong by the way? I assume that is a bong; I wouldn’t know as I was a perfect angel in college. I didn’t think bongs made ringing sounds.

    1. “Bong” is what happens, I think, when the user inhales. Not that I would know either.
