What kind of thoughts were going on through Rick Santorum over-imaginative brain when he argued that contraception is “a license to do things in a sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be.”
I know he worries a lot about such things as man-on-dog sex but might he not have some greater perversion that haunts him.
It would have been nice if when we were created by God, as Santorum sees it, that we would have also come with the ability to repress our sexual urges until the sacrament of “holy wedlock” occurred. But unless Santorum thinks God intended for pubescent boys and girls to get married at pre-teen ages then he would have to concede that either God was having another joke at a believer’s expense or something as benign as masturbation will automatically doom our children to hell.
As a former Catholic I can identify with Santorum’s obsession with out-of-wedlock sex. I have been stared down and damned to hell by feisty old nuns and sanctimonious priests for even raising the question of sexual urges. But for Santorum to expose his concern about doing “things in a sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be”, he must surely have to confess the sin of impure thoughts each and every time he steps inside a confessional.
I wonder if the priest who hears his confessions has ever issued a penance of a seeking psychiatric help to address these depraved thoughts?
