The Good Son

The other day I read a news account about a protest in Ukraine. A reporter interviewed an older woman who held deep sympathies for Russia. The woman was quoted saying “If I had a gun I’d shoot them myself!!” She was referring to the Ukrainian soldiers who’d shown up to keep the protest from spinning out of control.

But instead of bringing a gun, the woman had grabbed her son and coaxed him into joining the protest. So the son obediently accompanied his Mom to the rally.

At some point a protester threw a Molotov cocktail at the troops. And then all hell broke loose. But the soldiers didn’t want to shoot their own people. So they fired warning shots at the ground instead. One of the bullets ricocheted off the pavement and tagged the son in the calf muscle. The mother, of course, emerged unscathed.

The pair rushed to the ER in some car model that no one outside Ukraine has ever heard of. At the hospital Mom gave the reporter another quote, calling her son “a true hero.”

The moral of the story is that at some point in life you just have to stop trying to make your mother happy. Your life just might depend upon it.
