Betty White, Queen Elizabeth to Star in “GOLDEN GIRLS: AFTERLIFE” on Netflix

The most anticipated new series of the 2023-24 streaming season will undoubtedly be Golden Girls: Afterlife with Betty White and Queen Elizabeth II.  The dramedy will feature the two icons as owners of a modest bed and breakfast on the outskirts of London.  High jinks and bittersweet romance will be the order of the day.

According to Netflix showrunner Blondell Weezen, “I originally thought it would be a tough sell to get the Queen on board with this project, but it turned out that she was enthusiastic from the get-go.  As Liz put it, ‘I spent my entire life being the poster child for restraint, decorum, stability, and stoicism.  And I don’t regret it.  But now that I’m dead I long for something different, something that lets the world see my gifts for physical comedy and passionate love scenes’.

Netflix has commissioned 6 episodes for the upcoming season, with an option to purchase 6 more.  The first episode is already in production, with Marlon Brando appearing as a neighborhood handyman desperately in love with the Queen.

Says Weezen:  “There’s a scene where Brando kneels down on the sidewalk below the second-floor window of the B&B — his arms outstretched, his palms up — screaming ‘LIZZZ-BETH!! LIZZZ-BETH!!’  It’s absolutely heart-wrenching.  And then Liz opens the window and pours a big vase filled with water down on his head.  From tears to laughs in a split second.  Classic!”
