‘Trashing the Dress’ Is Not a Wedding Reality Show, But It Probably Will Be Soon

This week, a video of a bride setting her wedding dress on fire for the sake of the Michael Bay-style photo opp went viral, bringing to light a growing trend at weddings: trashing the dress.

There’s really not much to describe here. A bride spends hundreds to thousands of dollars on a dress, gets married, and then destroys it in a fantastic manner for the sake of a cool photo to share on Facebook. When I heard about this social deterioration, I immediately thought of this clip from “The Simpsons.”

Apparently, one woman went so far with “trashing the dress” that she actually died during the photo shoot, being swept down a river because her dress was too heavy.

Other than this tragedy, the whole idea of “trashing the dress” is actually an exciting development when it comes to wedding ceremonies. It adds some suspense to an otherwise routine event. Think of the possibilities and ways to destroy the garment. A passel of possums defecating on a bride in a beautiful meadow. Provocative.

But if brides really wanna be cool and destructive, why don’t they do “trash the marriage,” where immediately after they get married, they pull the rug out from everyone and get divorced.

  1. No! No! No! Wedding gowns should never be trashed. That said, my mother let me wear hers as a Halloween costume one year. It was pretty cool.
