I sometimes struggle with social cues and appropriateness. For example, take my last job interview. It got off to a shaky start when the interviewer said “Do you have any questions before we begin?” and I said “Just one. Can I smoke in here?” Ten minutes later we were done and I left feeling baffled. Should I have brought an ashtray?
So here’s my new challenge. I’m heading back home next month. It’s been a while since I’ve been back, so I could really use some advice on something.
Remember when you were a little kid and your parents’ distant relatives would visit from out of town? But they hadn’t seen you for a few years. And when they first saw you they’d hold a hand in the air, a foot or so below your head. And then they’d say “Oh my god, I remember when you were this tall!!”
Here’s my question: If I see those relatives on this trip, is it okay to hold my hand a foot above their heads and say “Oh my god, I remember when you were this tall!!”
I really do love my relatives. So any advice you might have on this is greatly appreciated.
Oh yeah. And don’t forget to pinch their cheeks till they bleed.
You could say “Yeah, when I was that small, you used to give me this amount of money. Nor that I’m this size, can you putt your hand in your pocket and help a brother out?”
If you could ignore the mistake in the above comment, that would be kool.
