It’s Time For Some Compromise

The news is reporting that the 21-year-old arrested for a mass shooting at a black church in South Carolina had Confederate flag license plates on his car. This has reignited the debate in South Carolina over whether it’s appropriate to display the Confederate flag outside the State House building. The flag in question is currently part of the memorial seen below:

Representative Mark Sanford (R-Appalachian Trail) weighed in on displaying the Confederate flag at the capital after the recent shooting. Speaking to reporters, he called the debate over the flag a “complex issue.”

Sanford is correct. This issue probably isn’t going to go away quickly, like the Confederacy did. As with any complex issue, you need to fashion a compromise. Fortunately, one legislator in the state has proposed and ingenious solution: The state agrees not to fly the flag publicly. But the next time a white guy with a gun kills minorities, he doesn’t appear in court wearing the standard-issue orange jump suit. Instead, he shows up wearing a suit made out of the Confederate flag. That way the flag gets displayed AND people get to see what it stands for.

Nicely done, Senator! Compromise is such a good thing.

  1. The issue is so simple that it has gone back around the other side of the meter and become complex. Sort of like when cold gets so cold that it gets hot. Or when stupid gets so stupid that it gets…no, it doesn’t work that way.
