Shoes, shoes, shoes.

“I’ve got enough shoes,” said no runner, ever.

You can never have enough running shoes! What about those shoes you ran your first PR in, or the ones you placed first in your age bracket or the first half marathon you ever ran? Gotta keep them, they are special. You’ll never use them again but it’s like that trophy you won at the company picnic for coming in first with your partner at the 3 legged race. Can’t get rid of that one.

And you just have to try the latest model from your favorite shoe brand “it’s super light, it’s got foam, it’s got a new sole pattern for better grip” so you just have to have it, right? Just ignore the fact that you got a new pair from your wife for Christmas plus a gift certificate from the kids for your birthday. Hey, these are NEW.

Yes, I know you are supposed to get new shoes every 400-500 miles but if you only run 15 miles a week, you only need a new pair every six months. But they look so pretty.

Last weekend I was at a local sports shop that was hosting a Memorial Day run. Saturday was packet pick up day and everything in the store was 40% off. Wow, 40%, what a deal. One couple came in with their young daughter and each of them was running in the race. Once they got lured into the 40% off shoe department by the young sales lady they were hooked. Not that the sales lady didn’t earn her commission, far from it. She must have brought out and returned two dozen shoes for this group, they spent well over an hour trying on, rejecting, trying on and finally deciding. Ultimately the trio walked away with 4 pairs of shoes. Obviously, someone bought more than one pair. (I think it was Mom).

Since my table was next to the shoe department, the obvious question to ask “was I seduced by the great discount”? Silly question, of course I was, despite the fact that I already had two pairs at home and a coupon for another store. I couldn’t resist and at those prices, well I should have bought two pairs. Oh well, they are having a tent sale next month so I’ll go back again.

Oh look, here’s a 20% off sale at the online store, good until the end of the week!
