Context

Sometimes I don’t understand what a word or a prefix means. Many times context can help. Each time I read or hear such a thing, I make an educated guess about what the word or prefix could possibly mean. Many years ago, I kept hearing and reading “pseudo”. In the context, it may have been something like “figure skating is a pseudo-sport” or “John Doe is a pseudonym”. I quickly figured out the respective meanings – that figure skating is not a real sport and John Doe is not a real nym.

So.. Along these lines, I have never heard the name “Rick Santorum” without being prefaced by the term “uber-conservative”. I am pretty sure “uber” is from some other language, most likely German. But with repeated contextual clues, I feel fairly certain to have deduced that “uber” cannot possibly mean anything but “asshole”.
