Did You Bring Your Pencil? It’s Time To Learn About The Gulf Stream.

Climate scientists are warning that the melting of the polar ice caps may be messing with the Gulf Stream. The Gulf Stream is the ocean current that warms Northern Europe and New England. It’s the reason that, as a kid, I could go to the Rhode Island shore in the summer and it’d be hot.

Speaking of hot, I saw this image in an article I read about adults who cheat (on spouses, not on their students’ Common Core tests):

ChestHairGulfStream

My first thought wasn’t that the guy was smokin’. Nope, it was that this image would make for an excellent teaching tool about the Gulf Stream. If it starts to fail, kids are going to need to learn about this essential water current. But most science curriculum on this topic is about as fun as reading classical Russian literature. Like the woman pictured above, we need a better tool.

If you can stand it, look closely at the guy’s chest hair. See how it swirls weirdly, up and to the right?

Yes, if you were teaching kids about the Gulf Stream, this would be the perfect image. The guy’s head is America, his belly button is the Caribbean, and his right shoulder is England. Follow the hair and you can see how warm water pools in the Caribbean, curves beneath Florida, and flows along the Eastern seaboard before veering off towards England.

Extra points if you can tell me which of his nipples is Cuba.

Science is tough. Fortunately, teachers now have a fun way to explain the Gulf Stream to their students.
