Thanksgiving Turkey Trot:

Well, it’s that time of year again, Thanksgiving!

And what does that mean? Well for runners, it’s “Turkey Trot” time.

For races with only a few hundred participants to 1000’s of runners, every community, large and small, will be staging a run for all those trying to assuage their guilt of upcoming eating of massive amounts of food by running off a few calories in a 5K run.

Ignorant of the fact, of course, that eating massive amounts of turkey, green bean casseroles, mashed potatoes and gravy, dinner rolls and many glasses of beer or wine would require the running of a marathon to offset that kind of caloric intake!

But that’s OK, it’s a time honored tradition throughout the country and, for many, the only time of the year when they will venture outside for any type of exercise other than walking to the mailbox. All for the good of supporting the community, I suppose. We’ll never see them again until next year!

I always wondered who came up with the term “Turkey Trot”? I’ve never seen a turkey actually trot. I do get them in my backyard from time to time and they certainly can run and they are able to fly but trot, never.

Horses trot, I believe there are races specifically for them, but I’ve never seen a race for and by turkeys.

Here’s one of the dictionary definitions of “trot”:

(with reference to a horse or other quadruped) proceed or cause to proceed at a pace faster than a walk, lifting each diagonal pair of legs alternately.

It’s hardly the description that fits but probably sounds better than “Quadruped Trot”.

Anyway, I’m certain that this time honored event will never change, so, Happy Thanksgiving to runners and non runners alike.
