Questions I get asked

Over the years, when talking with new acquaintances this question usually arises “What do you do?” and then we each go on and discuss our work, our family and then our hobbies etc. so I do end up mentioning that I’m a long time runner. If the other person is a runner (unlikely) we’ll talk about our running activities, if the other person is a non-runner (likely) then I inevitably get asked a number of questions. Here are some of them (and my responses):

“Did you win your last race?”

Well, no, I didn’t, there was an 18 year old high school state champion that won the overall race. Since I’m many decades older than him I thought I did damn good by winning my age division!

“Did you run a marathon?”

No, I didn’t, at my age, I’m just happy to be able to run a 5K and not have a heart attack but I’d be happy to sign you up for the next one if you wish. (I’ve never had a positive response to that request).

“Do you run in the rain?”

You bet I get a workout in and a shower at the same time.

“Isn’t running bad for your knees?”

Nope, no scientific evidence to support that, it’s an old wives tale used by non-runners as an excuse.

“Won’t it be painful?”

Yep, it will be from time to time. The old saying “no pain, no gain” is certainly true but if you want to enjoy the benefits, it’s highly worth it.

“I don’t have time to run, how do you find the time?”

As the old Nike commercial says “Just do it”. Turn off the TV, go to bed a half hour earlier, and get up a half hour earlier. Discipline creates performance. Wake up, get up, dress up and never, ever give up.

Don’t let this be you.
