In an announcement that had been expected for months, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene have taken the national anti-vaccination movement to the next level. Yesterday, they vowed that they will do everything in their power to dismantle the federal government’s “Polio Vaccine Pharmaceutical-Industrial Complex.”
In a joint statement, they decried requirements that children in the United States be vaccinated against polio. As DeSantis asserted at a morning press conference, “let’s stop coddling our kids and depriving them of character-building diseases. Just look at Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He had polio, and except for the New Deal legislation he sponsored that ordered parents to raise every other child as either gay or Communist, he was one of our greatest Presidents. FDR is the poster boy for what we’re trying to achieve in the EMBRACE POLIO movement.
“Make no mistake. We won’t be satisfied until polio vaccines are banned in the U. S. Every time you take away an innocent toddler’s opportunity to contract this crippling ailment, you’re taking away their chance to do something courageous and meaningful with their lives. Please join us. Your children have nothing to lose but their ability to walk without crutches.”
