Life Imitates So-called Art

expendables3

Last night I watched The Expendables 3, mostly because I didn’t feel like putting in the effort to search for something good. At one point Stallone was standing on the tarmac, talking to a fellow warrior prior to the two of them engaging in some heroic battle. The moment was supposed to be dramatic, but it wasn’t. It was borderline ridiculous. And the dialogue struggled to reveal a deep tension between a pair of badasses who were about to do something of utmost importance.

Instead, I half expected someone off-camera to say “C’mon guys, its time for the bingo game to start. Grab your Ensure.”

And then Stallone got an I-couldn’t-be-more-serious look on his face and delivered the climactic line: “We’re part of the past. If we keep this up, the only way this ends for any of us is in a hole in the ground, and no one will give a sh*t.”

I realized immediately that I’d seen this same exchange recently. In the news. Yes, it was just like the ongoing feud between Donald Trump and John McCain. Trump initially called out McCain for referring to Trump supporters as “crazies” (not a very smooth move on McCain’s part) and then denigrated McCain’s military service (a bad move on Trump’s part).

Can a filmmaker sue politicians for copyright infringement?

If you’re planning on watching the first GOP presidential primary debate on Fox, I’d recommend watching one of The Expendables movies first. After you watch that, the guys “debating” on stage and what they’re saying will make total sense.

  1. I’m not sure you should make fun of a comedy featuring too many expendable old men to keep track of them all.
