  1. I believe there’s a little guy who’s in charge of retrieving memories from the huge basement library of our minds. Once you try to recall something, he goes to work right away and keeps working on it till he finds what you wanted to know—but he gets older as you do. He’s not as spry and quick as he used to be, and there are many more card catalog boxes to check than when you were younger. So he has to get on that tall, rolling ladder and start looking in boxes until he can narrow it down to the precise stored information you’ve asked for. This takes time, and this is why you can wake up knowing the answer when you didn’t know it before you went to sleep. He kept working. This also explains why the answer can suddenly come to you when you’re having a conversation about something completely different. He sends the answer upstairs as soon as he finds it.

  2. If Wanda is anything like my old laptop, she only wakes up when I add more bits of memory.
