Are runners crazy:

At a recent meeting, the subject was habits (not the ones the nuns wear!).

One meeting participant stated that she could not understand how runners could possibly get up and go out for a run EVERY day. She wondered if that was a habit or an addiction. Obviously, this person wasn’t a runner.

Another member of the group knew that I was a long-time runner so asked if I had an answer. I politely declined inasmuch as it was a mixed meeting (men and women) and I wanted to strive to act professionally.

Afterwards, I took the time to look up the definitions of both.

HABIT:

  • a settled or regular tendency or practice, especially one that is hard to give up.”
  • “an addictive practice, especially one of taking drugs”

ADDICTION:

  • “the fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or activity.

So now I know. The answer to the question is “YES”.
